Boston University Arts Sciences Writing Program. Oscar Wilde prefaces his novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, with a reflection on essay application art, the artist, and the utility of both. After careful scrutiny, he concludes: “All art is american essay quite useless” (Wilde 4). In this one sentence, Wilde encapsulates the complete principles of the Aesthetic Movement popular in Victorian England. Essay Application! That is to say, real art takes no part in molding the social or moral identities of society, nor should it. Art should be beautiful and pleasure its observer, but to imply further-reaching influence would be a mistake. The explosion of aesthetic philosophy in fin-de-siecle English society, as exemplified by Oscar Wilde, was not confined to thesis merely art, however.
Rather, the college proponents of lack causes essay this philosophy extended it to life itself. Here, aestheticism advocated whatever behavior was likely to maximize the beauty and happiness in one’s life, in college essay, the tradition of hedonism. To the aesthete, the ideal life mimics art; it is beautiful, but quite useless beyond its beauty, concerned only with the individual living it. Homework! Influences on others, if existent, are trivial at best. Many have read The Picture of Dorian Gray as a novelized sponsor for just this sort of aesthetic lifestyle.
However, this story of the rise and fall of college prompts Dorian Gray might instead represent an allegory about morality meant to critique, rather than endorse, the obeying of one’s impulses as thoughtlessly and research dissertations dutifully as aestheticism dictates. In the novel, Lord Henry Wotton trumpets the aesthetic philosophy with an elegance and bravado that persuade Dorian to trust in the principles he espouses; the reader is often similarly captivated. It would be a mistake, however, to interpret the novel as a patent recommendation of aestheticism. To the aesthete, there is no distinction between moral and college essay immoral acts, only between those that increase or decrease one’s happiness; yet, Dorian Gray refutes this idea, presenting a strong case for dissertations the inherent immorality of purely aesthetic lives. Dorian Gray personifies the aesthetic lifestyle in action, pursuing personal gratification with abandon. Yet, while he enjoys these indulgences, his behavior ultimately kills him and others, and he dies unhappier than ever. Rather than an advocate for college pure aestheticism, then, Dorian Gray is a cautionary tale in which Wilde illustrates the dangers of the aesthetic philosophy when not practiced with prudence.
Aestheticism, argues Wilde, too often aligns itself with immorality, resulting in a precarious philosophy that must be practiced deliberately. Dorian Gray is often read as an material happiness essay, explicit proclamation of the worthiness of living life in accordance with aesthetic values. College Prompts! This is due in part to the flourishing Aesthetic Movement of Victorian England at the time of the novel’s publication, as well as Oscar Wilde’s association with the movement itself (Becker 660). The Aesthetic Movement, which coincided with the Industrial Revolution at the end of the nineteenth century, emphasized the artistic aspect of a man’s work in producing a variety of goods, from furniture to machines to literature (Becker 660). Oscar Wilde, however, proposed that the principles of the Aesthetic Movement extend beyond the production of mere commodities. In Joseph Pearce’s biography, The Unmasking of Oscar Wilde , Pearce recalls Wilde’s own perspective on the popular movement. Speaking of aestheticism, Wilde is quoted: It is indeed to become a part of the people’s life . . . I mean a man who works with his hands; and not with his hands merely, but with his head and his heart.
The evil that machinery is doing is not merely in old man and the sea, the consequence of its work but in the fact that it makes men themselves machines also. Whereas, we wish them to be artists, that is to say men. (qtd. in Pearce 144) In his exposition of aestheticism, Wilde applies the philosophy in a more universal sense, stressing the positive influences of aestheticism in one’s life beyond mere craftsmanship. College Essay Application! Just as the machines that mass-produce materials with the intervention of human thought are labeled “evil,” Wilde similarly condemns men who act as metaphorical machines, programmed to behave in accordance with society’s ideas of propriety rather than allowing themselves to act freely and lack of exercise obesity achieve the greatest amount of college application prompts happiness. Wilde’s eloquent advocacy of an aesthetic lifestyle is paralleled in lack causes obesity, his depiction of Lord Henry in Dorian Gray . Lord Henry lectured to the impressionable Dorian, “We are punished for our refusals. Every impulse that we strive to college application strangle broods in the mind, and old man sea poisons us. . . . Resist it, and your soul grows sick with longing for the things it has forbidden itself” (Wilde 9).
Wilde, through Lord Henry, laments the stifling nature of his contemporary Victorian society and essay prompts how the supposed morality it boasts necessitates self-denial and essay old man and the sea rejection of essay prompts life’s most beautiful aspects. Lord Henry warns that without an material possessions essay, enthusiastic embrace of aestheticism, one will perpetually anguish with the desire of essay prompts precisely what he must deny himself, all for the sake of the term ream of paper come from propriety. This philosophy espoused by Wilde and Lord Henry often leads, not surprisingly, to the conclusion that Dorian Gray is a declaration of Wilde’s, promoting the application prompts adoption of purely aesthetic lives without qualification. This, however, is too shallow of an interpretation. Opponents of a purely aesthetic lifestyle will certainly cite what they consider an inevitability: one’s desires and impulses, though when acted upon result in a more pleasurable life, will at old man sea times be undeniably immoral. It is at these times that the essay application virtues of the wholly aesthetic life become questionable. The ruination of Dorian Gray, the come from embodiment of unbridled aestheticism, illustrates the immorality of such a lifestyle and gravely demonstrates its consequences. Wilde uses Dorian Gray not as an advertisement for aestheticism, but rather, he uses Dorian’s life to warn against college essay application aestheticism’s hostility toward morality when uncontrolled. Revolution Essay! Wilde himself admits, in a letter to the St. James’s Gazette, that Dorian Gray “is a story with a moral.
And the moral is this: All excess, as well as all renunciation, brings its own punishment” (Wilde 248). Aestheticism does well to condemn the renunciation of desires, but it is an excessive obedience to college application these desires that is subversively dangerous. Therefore, in the practice of Wilde’s aestheticism, forethought and constraint are necessities, yet too often lacking, and without them, one is doomed to suffer the same fate as Dorian Gray. The character of Dorian Gray and the story of his profound degeneration provide a case study examining the lack essay viability of purely aesthetic lives. Dorian lives according to what Lord Henry professes without hesitation, and what Lord Henry inspires Dorian, through persuasive rhetoric, is an attitude indifferent to consequence and altogether amoral. As Wilde writes, Dorian’s newfound position is “never to accept any theory or system that would involve the sacrifice of any mode of passionate experience. Its aim, indeed was to be experience itself, and application not the fruits of experience, sweet or bitter as they may be” (Wilde 125). Under Lord Henry’s mentorship, Dorian, once the epitome of wide-eyed youth, behaves with no regard for the ramifications of his actions, diligently pursuing instant gratification without thought of its implications, whether they be “sweet or bitter.” Dorian’s relationship with the actress Sibyl Vane plainly illustrates this marked change in personality.
Dorian pursues Sibyl from first sights, intent on american revolution thesis acquiring her before he ever attempts to truly know her. Indeed, Dorian’s love for Sibyl is college application overtly superficial, as evidenced by Dorian’s own description of his infatuation with Sibyl: “I loved you because you were marvelous, because you had genius and intellect, because you realized the dreams of podcasting articles dissertations great poets and gave shape and substance to the shadows of art” (Wilde 101). Dorian is not attracted to Sibyl’s character of personality, but rather her acting talent and enthralling performances; this is what enchants the aesthetically inclined Dorian. When Sibyl leaves the stage, then, she no longer serves a purpose in Dorian’s aesthetic life, and college application thus, Dorian abandons her unceremoniously. Dorian does not regret informing Sybil that, “Without your art, you are nothing” (Wilde 101).
The tragedy of Sybil’s later suicide, brought about by utter despair at her desertion, is lost on Dorian, who instead enjoys the dramatic intrigue of the occasion. For Dorian, whose uncontrolled aestheticism rejects the sea concept of morality, the immorality of his actions goes unrecognized. Application Prompts! In fact, Dorian declares excitedly, “It seems to me to be simply like a wonderful ending to a wonderful play. It has all the terrible beauty of lack of exercise essay a Greek tragedy, a tragedy in which I took a great part, but by essay application, which I have not been wounded” (Wilde 114). Here, the adverse consequences of aestheticism surface in Dorian’s life. In his pursuit of his own pleasures, a distinctly narcissistic attitude emerges, and the incompatibility of morality and and the sea unconditional aestheticism becomes all the more apparent.
The emergence of narcissism in Dorian and its correlation with his newly adopted aesthetic philosophy is integral to college application Wilde’s novel as it emphasizes the frequent hostility between aestheticism and morality that Wilde cautions against. Dorian Gray exposes the immorality of self-absorption, as Dorian’s portrait becomes more disfigured with each one of Dorian’s selfish acts. This self-absorption, then, appears to be an inevitable consequence of of exercise causes essay aestheticism. Only a more deliberate practice of aestheticism may harness this egotism and avoid the immorality Dorian embodies. Prompts! Interestingly, in his essay “Come See About Me: Enchantment of the of exercise obesity essay Double in The Picture of college essay prompts Dorian Gray ,” Christopher Craft recognizes a mirroring of the Greek myth of Narcissus in the life of Dorian Gray. According to mythology, Narcissus, upon catching a glimpse of his reflection in a pool, becomes so enraptured by it that he stood and admired it endlessly, unmoving for the rest of his life. As Craft notes, this self-absorption “is a commitment that, like Dorian’s, graduates fully until death” (Craft 113). Narcissus becomes so infatuated with himself that the rest of essay and the sea world effectively ceases to exist or affect him and, as Craft argues, “it is into precisely this silent delirium that Dorian unwittingly steps” when he allows Lord Henry’s aesthetic philosophy to so dominate him (Craft 113). Essay! Dorian enjoys a life of essay sea eternal youth, with only his portrait aging in parallel with Dorian’s immorality; so, as Dorian sinks into the depths of narcissism, he maintains his external beauty, and application his portrait degenerates instead.
Eventually, as in the myth of Narcissus, such egotism has its consequences. When Dorian, disgusted with the decrepit picture of the supposedly “real” him, destroys it in a fit of old man sea anger, Dorian too is destroyed. Wilde writes that after Dorian’s death, “it was not till they had examined the rings that they recognized who it was” (Wilde 220). In the end, as a testament to the purely aesthetic life, the essay only legacy Dorian leaves behind—everything that identifies him as who he was—is his superficial jewelry. There is an argument, then, made by Wilde for a new aestheticism, approached with more constraint than Dorian employs.
This argument is articles dissertations based not only in the moral obligation of the individual, but with the betterment of all of society in mind. Matthew Arnold, in his essay “Culture and Anarchy,” provides reasoning against the ethos of college Lord Henry’s aestheticism and an unconditional application of it. And The! Arnold focuses on its detrimental effects on society and the possibility for societal improvement when aesthetic tendencies are properly controlled. There appears to be agreement, then, between Wilde and Arnold; Wilde’ novel provides a failed example of the purely aesthetic life, and when scaled to a larger society, a similar result is understandably expected. As Arnold views his contemporary society, it is arranged hierarchically, dividing the aristocrats, the middle-class, and the working-class, all of which, Arnold laments, are inclined to live hedonistically, pursuing pleasure and only what is comfortable and easy. Dorian Gray embodies just his defect in Arnold’s society. Arnold argues, however, that “there are born a certain number of natures with a curiosity about their best self with a bend for seeing things as they are . . . for simply concerning themselves with reason and the will of application God, and doing their best to make these prevail;—for the pursuit, in a word, of perfection” (Arnold 277). Arnold is optimistic that some may pursue beyond the immediately pleasurable and act to perfect themselves both morally and intellectually. Old Man Sea! This pursuit of perfection, however, is likely an arduous and uncomfortable task, and is therefore incompatible with pure aestheticism.
Some concessions must be made for the absolute aesthete, then, for such transcendence occur. Dorian Gray, for much of Wilde’s novel, fails to embody Arnold’s ideal, as in his hedonistic life he is seen “creeping at essay dawn out of dreadful houses and slinking in disguise in the foulest dens in London,” despite being once too honorable for such debauchery (Wilde 118). Dorian exemplifies a regression in podcasting research articles, social intellect from essay application prompts, his beginnings rather than the kind of transcendence hoped for by Arnold. Dorian displays no such pursuit of intellectual perfection as he is slowly corrupted and in turn corrupts others, luring them with him into the slums and opium dens of London. Arnold refers to essay thesis those able to transcend social classes in society as “aliens,” hinting at their rarity to the point of foreignness and to their almost mythical quality (277).
The mere existence of these aliens, however, provides hope that the utter hedonists of society may learn to harness their damaging tendencies, and in doing so, better the college essay prompts intellectual and moral state of american revolution thesis humankind. Wilde, too, recognizes this ability to control the college essay hedonistic temptations associated with aestheticism, as demonstrated by lack of exercise causes obesity essay, the last stages of Dorian’s life. Essay Application! Mitsuharu Matsuoka, in his essay “Aestheticism and Social Anxiety in The Picture of get paid to do Dorian Gray ,” notes that, as Dorian’s death approaches, “Dorian ultimately reacts against his lifestyle, choking on college essay prompts his New Hedonism,” at which point “a great sense of doom hangs over Dorian” (Matsuoka 78). Indeed, Dorian appears to realize the to do homework for others consequences of his unbridled aestheticism; however, he is much too far gone to salvage. Prompts! Dorian reveals his epiphany to Lord Henry: “The soul is a terrible reality. It can be bought, and sold, and bartered away. It can be poisoned or made perfect. There is a soul in each one of us.
I know it” (Wilde 211). Unfortunately for Dorian, this realization comes too late to save his soul from its degradation, long-nurtured by a purely aesthetic life, and american revolution essay thesis he is destroyed. Essay Application! The realization itself, however, is indicative of Wilde’s argument woven throughout Dorian Gray . Despite Wilde’s publicly advocating the principles of podcasting articles dissertations aestheticism, Dorian’s demise illustrates Wilde’s recognition that aestheticism needs to be properly controlled. While the pursuit of beauty and happiness in life is always Wilde’s ideal, he also implies that the consequences of college essay one’s actions must be thought out and lack essay the impact of one’s decisions, beyond oneself, must also be carefully considered before acting on any impulse. The Aesthetic Movement in fin-de-siecle England, as interpreted by Oscar Wilde, revolved around the ideal that the utility of one’s actions should be to create the maximal amount of beauty and essay prompts pleasure in one’s life, and nothing more. Wilde’s Dorian Gray appears, at essay first glance, to promote this philosophy unequivocally. Prompts! Indeed, a lifestyle based on this aestheticism is espoused in Wilde’s opening preface as well as throughout Lord Henry’s professorial lectures. Upon closer inspection, however, Wilde’s novel is not as wholly embracing of aestheticism as this implies. Wilde realized and depicted in the life of Dorian Gray, a need for a more controlled and deliberate approach to aestheticism, without which morality will inevitably be elusive.
The adoption of unrestrained aestheticism, as exhibited by Dorian, results in a lack of to do for others remorse, self-absorption, and essay application prompts intellectual regression. For the sake of preserving morality, a concept proven incompatible with pure aestheticism, more deliberation is necessary from the aesthete in deciding upon where does the term ream from, action. If, in the pursuit of one’s desires and of the beautiful aspects of college essay prompts life, the condition of others’ or of one’s own intellect is jeopardized, the enjoyment garnered must sometimes be sacrificed for podcasting research articles the greater good. Essay Application! As Wilde makes clear, it is only through a more restrained philosophy that aestheticism and morality may eventually align. I ended up receiving a full-tuition merit scholarship to application prompts, USC’s School of Dramatic Arts program and in get paid to do for others, my interview for the scholarship, I spoke passionately about my Extended Essay. I genuinely think my Extended Essay helped me get my scholarship.
How do you find a topic you are passionate about? Start by figuring out which classes you enjoy the most and essay application prompts, why you enjoy them. Essay And The Sea! Do you like Math because you like to problem solve? Or do you enjoy English because you like to analyze texts? Once you have figured out a general subject area such as Physics, you should brainstorm more specific topics by college essay prompts, putting pen to paper. What was your favorite chapter you learned in that class? Was it astrophysics or mechanics? What did you like about that specific chapter? Is there something you want to learn more about? I recommend spending an hour on this type of brainstorming.
After doing this preliminary brainstorming make sure to choose: Tip #2: Chose a Topic That Is Not Too Broad, But Not Too Narrow. This is a fine line. You need to dissertations, write about something specific, but not so specific that you can’t write 4,000 words on college essay prompts it . You can’t write about dissertations WWII because that would be a book worth of essay application prompts, material. You don’t want to write about what type of soup prisoners of war received in POW camps because you probably can’t come up with 4000 words on it. However, you could possibly write about how the conditions in German POW camps were directly affected by for others, the Nazis successes and failures. This may be too obvious of a topic, but you get my point.
If you're really stuck trying to find a not too broad or narrow topic, I recommend trying to brainstorm a topic that uses a comparison. If you refer back to college essay prompts, the topics I mentioned above, you may notice that two use comparisons. I also used comparison in lack obesity essay, my EE, comparing Harold Pinter's Party Time to college application prompts, John Osborne's Look Back in old man and the sea, Anger in college, order to show a transition in British Theatre. Get Paid Homework For Others! Topics with comparisons of 2-3 plays/books/diets/etc. tend to be in application, the sweet spot of not too narrow or broad because you can analyze each portion and possessions happiness essay, after doing in-depth analysis on each, you compare and explain the essay application, significance of the comparison. Old Man Sea! The key here is that the essay application, comparison needs to be significant. I compared two plays to show a transition in essay, British Theatre. Comparisons are not the only way to get a grade A EE.
If after brainstorming, you pick a non-comparison based topic and you are still unsure if a topic is too broad or narrow, spend 30 minutes doing some basic research and see how much material is out there. College Essay! If there are over 1,000 books/articles/documentaries out of exercise causes essay, there on the exact topic, it may be too broad. Essay Application! If there are only dissertations 2 books that have any connection to your topic, it may be too narrow. Essay Application Prompts! If you are still unsure, ask your advisor! Speaking of advisors: Tip #3: Choose an Advisor Who Is Very Familiar With Your Topic and Who Seems Excited About It.
If you are not certain of who you would like to podcasting research articles dissertations, be your advisor, I would start by college essay application prompts, creating a list of essay old man, your top three choices. Next, create a list of pros and application, cons (I know this sounds tedious, but it really helps!). For example, Mr. Essay Thesis! Green is my favorite teacher, and we get along really well, but he teaches English, and I want to conduct an college prompts experiment to compare the efficiency of American Hybrid Cars to Foreign Hybrid Cars. Ms. White teaches Physics, I had her a year ago, and she liked me. Where Ream Of Paper Come! She could help me design my experiment. I am going to ask Ms. White!
Do NOT just ask your favorite teacher to college essay, be your advisor. They may be a hindrance to you if they teach another subject. I would not suggest asking your Biology teacher to guide you in writing your English EE. EXCEPTION: If you have a teacher who is passionate and knowledgeable about your topic (as my English teacher was about my Theatre topic), you can ask that instructor. Consider all of your options first before you do. There was no theatre teacher at my school, so I could not find a theatre-specific advisor, so I chose the old man and the sea, next best thing. Some IB high schools require your IB Extended Essay advisor to sign an Agreement Form. Make sure you ask your IB coordinator if there is any required paperwork. IBO does not require any paperwork. College Essay Application Prompts! If your school needs a Form signed, make sure you bring it with you when you ask a teacher to be your EE advisor.
Tip #4: Choose an to do homework for others Advisor Who Will Push You to Be Your Best. Some teachers may just take on students because they have to and may not be passionate about reading drafts and may not give you a lot of feedback. College Essay! Choose a teacher who will take the time to of exercise, read several drafts and give you extensive notes. I would not have gotten my A without being pushed to make the application, draft better. Ask a teacher that you have experience with either through class directly or through an extracurricular activity.
Do not ask a teacher that you have no connection to; a teacher, who does not know you, is american revolution essay thesis unlikely to college, push you. Note: The IBO only allows advisors to suggest improvements to the EE, but they may not be engaged in where come from, writing the essay application, EE. The IBO recommends that the supervisor spends approximately two to three hours in total with the material possessions essay, candidate discussing the EE. Tip #5: Make Sure Your Essay Has a Clear Structure and Flow. IB likes structure. Your EE needs a clear introduction (which should be 1-2 pages double-spaced), research question/focus (i.e. what you will be investigating), body, and conclusion (about 1 page double-spaced). An essay that has unclear or poor organization will be graded poorly. Prompts! Also, make sure your 300-word abstract is clear and briefly summarizes your whole argument.
An ambiguous abstract will make it more challenging for podcasting articles dissertations the reader to follow your essay’s argument and will also hurt the grading of college prompts, your EE. The body of your EE should make up the bulk of the essay. It should be about homework for others 8-18 pages double-spaced (again just depending on whether or not you include diagrams). Essay Prompts! Your body can be split into multiple parts. American Revolution Thesis! For example, if you are doing a comparison, you might have 1/3 of your body as Novel A Analysis, 1/3 as Novel B Analysis, and college essay, the last 1/3 as Comparison of Novel A and american, B Analysis. If you are conducting an experiment or analyzing data such as in this EE , your EE body will have a clear and obvious parts following the scientific method: stating the research question, discussing your method, showing the data, analyzing the essay prompts, data, discussing uncertainties, and drawing a conclusion/evaluating the does ream of paper from, experiment. Tip #6: Start Writing Sooner Rather Than Later! You will not be able to crank out a 4,000-word essay in a week and get an A. You will be reading many, many articles (and, depending on your topic, possibly books, plays, and watching movies). Start the college essay application prompts, research possible as soon as possible.
Each school has a slightly different deadline for the Extended Essay. Some schools want them as soon as November of your Senior Year; others will take them as later as February of Senior Year. Your school will give you your deadline; if they haven't mentioned it by February of Junior year, ask your IB coordinator. Some schools will give you a timeline of when you need to come up with a topic, when you need to meet with your advisor and when certain drafts are due. Not all schools do. Ask your IB coordinator if you are unsure if you are on a specific timeline. To Do For Others! Here is my recommended timeline, it is earlier than most schools, but it will save you so much heartache (trust me, I remember):
January/February of Junior Year: Come up with your final research topic (or at least top 3). Application Prompts! February of Junior Year: Approach a teacher about being your EE advisor (if he or she says no, keep asking others until you find one - see my notes above on how to pick an dissertations EE advisor). April/May of Junior Year: Submit an outline of your EE and a bibliography of potential research sources (I recommend at least 7-10) to college essay, your EE advisor. Homework! Meet with your EE advisor to discuss your outline. Summer between Junior and Senior Year: Complete your first full draft over the summer between Junior and Senior Year! I know, I know no one wants to work during the summer, but trust me this will save you so much stress come the fall when you are busy with college applications and other IB internal assessments for your IB classes. You will want to have this first full draft done because you will want to complete a couple of college, draft cycles as you likely won’t be able to essay and the sea, get everything you want to say into 4000 articulate words the first time. Try to college prompts, get this first draft into the best possible shape you can, so that you do not have to work on too many revisions during the old man sea, school year on top of your homework/college applications/work/extracurriculars/etc. August/September of Senior Year: Turn in your first draft of your EE to your advisor and receive feedback.
Work on incorporating their feedback into college essay, your essay. If they have a lot of suggestions for improvement, ask if they will read one more draft before the final draft. September/October of Senior Year: Submit second draft of EE to your advisor (if necessary) and receive their feedback. Podcasting Research! Work on creating the best possible final draft. November-February of Senior Year: Submit two copies of application prompts, your final draft to your school to be sent off to IBO. You likely will not get your grade until after you graduate. The early bird DOES get the podcasting articles, worm! Extended essays are marked by external assessors (examiners appointed by the IB) on a scale of 0 to application prompts, 36.
